Understanding the distinct reporting protocols for Missing Persons, Lost Documents/Property, and Lost Electronic Gadgets ensures swift police intervention, safeguards personal data, and prevents identity misuse.
- Filing a Missing Person Report
When a person goes missing, immediate action is critical. Under Indian legal guidelines, there is no mandatory 24-hour waiting period before reporting a missing person.
• Immediate Police Station Visit: Approach the jurisdiction police station where the person was last seen or resides. In emergencies, any nearby station must record the information.
• Submit Required Information: Provide a written application detailing the person’s full name, age, physical description, clothing, medical conditions, last known location, recent photographs, and family contact details.
• Station Entry & FIR: The police record an entry in the Station General Diary (GD). If foul play, kidnapping, or abduction is suspected—or if a minor is involved—the police must immediately register a First Information Report (FIR) under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Always secure an acknowledged copy featuring the Crime or GD entry number. - Reporting Lost Documents & Personal Property
Losing non-stolen items (Passports, PAN Cards, Driving Licenses, or Marksheets) calls for a Lost Article Report rather than an FIR to obtain official duplicates and prevent identity theft.
• Online Citizen Portal: Citizens in Maharashtra can report misplaced items online via the Maharashtra Police Citizen Portal or regional police portals (e.g., Mumbai/Navi Mumbai Police Lost & Found portal).
• Digitally Signed Certificate: Upon providing item details, date, time, and location, the portal generates a digitally signed Lost Property Report. This certificate serves as mandatory proof of loss for issuing authorities, banks, and passport offices. - Reporting Lost Mobile Phones, Laptops & Tablets
Misplaced electronic devices carry severe risks of financial fraud and unauthorized data access, requiring dual technical reporting:
• Lost Mobile Phones (CEIR Portal): - File an online police report to secure a loss certificate containing your 15-digit IMEI number.
- Register on the Department of Telecommunications’ CEIR portal (ceir.gov.in) by uploading the police report, purchase invoice, and ID proof. CEIR blocks the IMEI across all Indian networks, rendering the device inoperable while enabling real-time network tracing.
• Laptops & Tablets: File an online police report explicitly citing the Brand, Model, and Hardware Serial Number / MAC Address. Use remote cloud utilities (Find My / Find My Device) to lock or erase data remotely.
Note: If an item or device is taken forcibly or stolen (rather than misplaced), report to the nearest police station immediately to register an FIR under Section 303 (Theft) or Section 304 (Snatching) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
